I am Marco Visconti, author of The Aleister Crowley Manual, Aleister Crowley’s Mysticism, and a teacher of the Western Esoteric Tradition. For more than thirty years, I have studied and practised ritual magick, Thelema, Freemasonry, and the strange initiatory currents that shaped modern occultism.
The Crowley Crawl is my attempt to bring that history back into the streets where it happened. This is not a standard ghost tour, a theatrical scare walk, or a quick circuit of spooky landmarks.
The Crawl offer two routes, each tracing a different current through the London Crowley inhabited so intensely and, in his own fashion, helped mythologise. Together they move through the worlds that fed his imagination and reputation: publishing, theatre, clubs, lodges, public scandals, and the wider cultural life of the city.
The point is not simply to stop at a series of addresses and recite what happened there. It is to walk London in a way that lets certain connections come to the fore: the overlap of literature and ritual, scandal and performance, old institutions and private obsessions, the respectable city and the stranger one that has always seemed to run just beneath it. Crowley becomes more legible when placed back into that landscape, among the streets, buildings, rivalries, friendships, and social worlds through which he actually moved.
Each route, therefore, works as both a biography and an urban history.
What survives is not a frozen occult past, but a network of places in which Crowley’s London can still be read, argued over, and, occasionally, felt pressing through the modern city.
Onwards From The Needle
(Route I)
Starting at Cleopatra’s Needle, this route cuts through the Strand and the old legal quarter before ending at Atlantis Bookshop.
Along the way, we trace Crowley through the streets, institutions, scandals, friendships, and occult networks that shaped his London years.
It is the Crawl at its most concentrated: respectable London above ground, and beneath it a trail of séances, secret societies, old grudges, vanished rooms, and occult London still clinging to the streets.
The West End Arcana
(Route II)
This route follows Crowley through the West End world of clubs, lodges, theatres, hotels, private rooms, and carefully managed appearances.
Here he emerges less as the distant magus of legend and more as a man moving through real social circles, cultivating alliances, provoking enemies, performing identities, and turning reputation itself into part of the work.
The result is a Crowley rooted firmly in the life of the city, where ceremony, society, scandal, and self-invention constantly overlap.
